Methodology
Test includes cytologic evaluation.
Specimen Requirements
Collect a first-morning, “deep-cough” sputum specimen, in a screw-capped, sterile container.
Collect specimen as follows:
1. Instruct patient to brush his/her teeth and/or rinse mouth well with water to minimize contaminating specimen with food particles, mouthwash, or oral drugs.
2. Have patient remove dentures.
3. Instruct patient to take a deep breath, hold it momentarily, then cough deeply and vigorously into container..
4. Tightly seal container, keep specimen refrigerated..
5. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and actual time of collection, collector’s initials, and type of specimen.
6. Deliver to Laboratory immediately.
Note: 1. Nasal aspirate or saliva is not acceptable.
2. Specimens delivered after hours may be placed in refrigerator until next working day or until delivered to laboratory.
3. The following specimens will be returned to the submitting physician:
A. Spilled specimen
B. No requisition form
C. Name on requisition does not match name on specimen
D. Unlabeled specimen
4. Please complete and submit an “Anatomic Pathology Request Form” form # 320-1415.
5. Place specimen in a plastic specimen bag with request form inserted into pocket separate from specimen.
