Specimen Requirements

Acceptable Specimens:

Catheterized or voided urine and bladder or renal pelvic washing

 

1. Hydrate patient (give several glasses of water 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to collection).

2. Collect urine (preferably not first-morning voided specimen) or washing obtained at time of cystoscopy in a screw-capped, sterile container. A minimum of 50 ml must be received if "FISH" testing is requested.

3. Specimen must be refrigerated until testing can be performed.

Note:  1. The following specimens will be returned to the submitting physician:

A. Spilled specimen
B. No requisition form
C. Name on requisition does not match name on specimen
D. Unlabeled specimen

2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, collector’s initials, and type of specimen.

3. Please complete and submit an “Anatomic Pathology Request Form” form # 320-1415.

4. Place specimen in a plastic specimen bag with request form inserted into pocket separate from specimen.
