Specimen Requirements

2 mL from a 24-hour urine collection. No preservative. Mix well before taking 2-mL aliquot. (An entire 24-hour urine collection is also acceptable.) Refrigerate specimen during collection, and send specimen refrigerated in plastic urine container.

Label specimen with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and time of collection, 24-Hour urine volume and the collector’s initials.

 

Specimen stability:  7 days refrigerated at 2-8°C

                                    30 days frozen at ≥-20°C

Minimum volume:    2 mL

 

 

Reference Values

40-220 mmol/24 hours

Testing may be performed on random urine specimen. Please be aware there are no normal ranges for random urine sodium
