Important Note

Conditions that affect RBC survival can alter HbA1c results. For example, factors known to lower HbA1c include acute blood loss, hemolytic anemia and RBC transfusions. Factors known to increase HbA1c include iron deficiency anemia and uremia.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of draw.

Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube. Send 3 mL of EDTA whole blood refrigerated. For pediatric specimen, draw a full, lavender-top (EDTA) MICROTAINER®. Label specimen with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and time of draw and phlebotomist’s initials.

 

Specimen stability:   

48 hours at room temperature

7 days at 2-8°C

 

Minimum volume:

1 mL

 

Specimen rejection criteria:

Clotted specimens are not acceptable.
