Test Code AFS Acid-Fast Bacilli (AFB) Smear, Direct

Important Note

Strongly suggest ordering a CTB and SAFB (Mayo tests). Sputum, bronchial washings or bronchial lavage are the only acceptable sources for the in-house Direct Acid Fast Smear. All non-respiratory specimen types and samples will be sent to the reference lab where they are processed for Mycobacteriology Culture (CTB) and concentrated Acid Fast Smear (SAFB).

Methodology

Note:  This test is performed at MaineGeneral Medical Center only if the patient has been placed in a tuberculosis (TB) isolation room due to high risk and/or symptoms of TB.
