Useful For

Beta-2 microglobulin is a protein found on the surface of most nucleated cells. 

  • Cancer Monitoring: Acts as a tumor marker for monitoring prognosis and treatment effectiveness in multiple myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and certain lymphomas.
  • Kidney Function: Used to evaluate renal failure or damage, particularly in kidney transplant recipients.
  • Other Uses: It acts as a marker for certain infectious diseases (like HIV) and inflammatory conditions.

Specimen Requirements

Collection Container/Tube:

Preferred: Serum

Acceptable: Red top

Submission Container/Tube: Plastic vial

Specimen Volume: 2mL preferred, 1.5mL minimum 

Collection Instructions: Centrifuge within 2 hours and aliquot serum into a plastic vial.
