Specimen Requirements

Stool

Unpreserved stool, preserved specimens in Cary-Blair or fecal swabs are acceptable. No other preservative has been approved for use. Avoid contamination with urine, soap or toilet paper.

 

Specimen stability:

Unpreserved samples should be received with in 4 hours of collection.

Samples should be refrigerated if a delay is expected. 

 

Minimum volume:

1 mL or 1 gram (if submitting fresh stool)

Screens for Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter and Shiga Toxin 1&2.

Speciation or serotyping is no longer available at the Maine Health and Environmental Testing Lab.
