Test Code CARBAR Carbapenem Resistant Screen
Useful For
This assay is performed on rectal and perirectal swab specimens from patients at risk of intestinal colonization with carbapenem-non-susceptible bacteria. Concomitant cultures are necessary to recover organisms for epidemiological typing, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and for further confirmatory bacterial identification. The Xpert Carba-R Assay, when performed on rectal and perirectal swab specimns, is not intended to guide or monitor treatment for carbapenem-non-susceptible bacterial infections or to determine infection from carbapenem-non-susceptible bacteria.
Specimen
Rectal or perirectal swab:
Only dual copan swabs (Cepheid) are acceptable and are available through the Microbiology Laboratory.
Collection of a paired rectal swab:
Carefully insert both swab tips approximately 1cm beyond the anal sphincter and rotate gently.
Specimen stability:
Swabs in the transport media can be stroed at 15-28°C for up to 5 days.
