Test Code HBREA Helicobacter pylori Breath Test

Important Note

This test is scheduled through central scheduling.

This test is only available on an out patient basis.

It is not known if PYTest(R) can cause fetal harm or excreted to human milk. Caution should be exercised when ordering breath pylori testing (PYTest(R)) on pregnant or nursing mothers.

Specimen Requirements

MaineGeneral Medical Center will collect breath specimens from a fasting patient (6 hours) using a Breath Test Collection Kit. Fasting includes no water, candy, gum, smoking of any kind and chewing tobacco.  Transport to Nuclear Medicine. Nuclear Medicine will send specimen out  for testing.

Note:  1. Patient must be off antibiotics and Pepto Bismol® for 1 month prior to testing. Patient must also be off Prilosec®, Prevacid®, or Carafate® for 2 weeks prior to testing. Ingestion of antibiiotics, proton pump inhibitors or sucralfate will cause false negative results.

2. Label specimen with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and time of collection, and collector’s initials.
