Specimen Requirements

Serum


Draw blood in a gold-top (serum separator) gel tube. Label the specimen with the patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and time of draw, phlebotomist’s initials and as serum. Spin down and send 1 mL of serum refrigerated.

 

Do not use samples that have been stored at room temperature for > 8 hours.

Specimen Stability

8 hours at room temperature

2 days refrigerated at 2-8°C

Freeze at ≤ -20°C for longer storage

Minimum Volume

1 mL

Specimen Rejection Criteria

Hemolyzed specimens are not acceptable.

Males

20-70 yrs:                    1.5 - 9.3 mIU/mL

>70 yrs:                       3.1 - 34.9 mIU/mL

Females

Normally menstruating

   Follicular phase:       1.9 - 12.5 mIU/mL

   Mid-cycle phase:      8.7 - 76.3 mIU/mL

   Luteal phase:            0.5 - 16.9 mIU/mL

Pregnant:                     <0.1 - 1.5 mIU/mL

Post-menopausal:      15.9 - 54.0 mIU/mL

Contraceptives:              0.7 - 5.6 mIU/mL

Children:                     <0.1 - 6.0 mIU/mL
