Reference Values
No methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated.
New MRSA isolates will be communicated to Infection Control and called to the patient location.

Methodology
Note: Culture to rule out presence or absence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) only. Does not include susceptibility testing.
Specimen Requirements
Throat or Perineal
Collect specimen using an Optiswab/Eswab (liquid Aimes). Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and actual time of collection, collector’s initials and the specimen source. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Notes:
1. Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
2. Nares, Nasal secretion, saliva, or 24-hour collection is not acceptable.
Specimen stability:
The specimen should arrive on the day of collection. The swab is stable for 48 hours.
Minimum volume:
One Optiswab or Eswab (liquid Aimes) tube
