Important Note

Per FDA regulations, this test can only be performed on patients who are taking Coumadin. A Point of Care INR cannot be used as a screening test.

Minimum volume:  8 µL

Specimen stability:  N/A

Reference Values

INR range for normal, not on Coumadin therapy:  0.9 - 1.2

Reportable range:  0.8->4.0

An INR that is >4.0 must be confirmed with a PTINR (prothrombin time) performed by the clinical laboratory.

Day(s) Test Set Up

Monday through Sunday

Criteria for Specimen Rejection

1. Plasma or serum cannot be used as a testing sample.

2. The blood drop must be a minimum of 8 µL in volume. A low sample will cause an error message.

3. The sample must be used immediately after collection.

4. Additional blood sample should not be added to the test strip once testing has begun.

5. Venous samples collected in a syringe containing anticoagulant.

6. The second drop of blood from the fingerstick cannot be used. If needed, repeat the finger stick   and use a new test strip.

7. When a patient is on intravenous infusion therapy, the sample cannot be obtained from the arm receiving the infusion.
