Specimen Requirements
Serum
Draw blood in a gold-top (serum separator) gel tube or a red-top (no additive) tube. Label the specimen with the patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and time of draw, phlebotomist’s initials, and as serum. Spin down and send 1 mL of serum refrigerated.
*If multiple myeloma is suspected, please indicate.
Specimen stability:
3 days refrigerated at 2-8°C
Minimum volume:
1 mL
Specimen rejection criteria:
Green-top (lithium heparin) tube or hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.

Reference Values
Total protein: 6.4-8.2 g/dL
Albumin: 3.5-5.0 g/dL
Alpha-1-globulin: 0.1-0.4 g/dL
Alpha-2-globulin: 0.5-1.1 g/dL
Beta-globulin: 0.6-1.2 g/dL
Gamma-globulin: 0.5-1.5 g/dL
