Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a serum gel tube(s). (Green-top [heparin] tube, grossly hemolyzed or lipemic specimen is not acceptable.) For pediatric specimen, draw blood in a red-top MICROTAINER(S)®. Spin down and send 2 mL of serum refrigerated. If there is a delay in transport of ≥24 hours, send specimen frozen in plastic vial.

Note:  1. If multiple myeloma is suspected, please indicate.

2. Specimens suspected of having macroglobulins or cryoglobulins should be drawn, held, and transported to the laboratory at 37° C. Specimens suspected of containing cold agglutinins should not be refrigerated prior to or following centrifugation and transportation to the laboratory.

3. Patient’s age is required on request form for processing.

4. Label specimen with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and time of draw, and phlebotomist’s initials.
